The John Davies Gallery delights in representing the works of David Prentice, whose works capture the essence of the environment that they masterfully convey.
Prentice is a master with all the constituent elements - height, breadth, depth - all derived from 'proper drawing'. And being the observer that he is, weather is an integral ingredient - sunlight, cloud and mist. Prentice's city paintings deal with so much - bustling traffic, artificial light, the broad powerful Thames - all these imbue the works with great vitality.
Of his landscape paintings, David says the following; "My attachment to the landscape of the Malverns is hedonistic. I have made so many studies that I have gained an ability to revolve the landscape in the mind's eye. A profound understanding of the form of the landscape allows me to soar imaginatively above it when I am working out of my studio".
I have encounteres few painters who convey the English landscape with such depth and power; this artist's pastels and oil paintings reveal a seriously searching mind celebrating both the physical and abstract elements of the envirnment: I commend David's work to you for its enduring qualities.
