The delivery to the gallery of a new group of paintings for exhibition is almost always a most rewarding experience, and it is a very particular joy with those of William Selby.
Bill produces truly inspired, magnificently inventive groups of new work. In addition to fresh landscapes of the Yorkshire moors, his old home territory, he gives us strong, contrasting coastal views from Devon, Dorset and Yorkshire, as well as most engaging collections of table-top compositions.
This latter group comprise paintings of considerable contrasts. Some relatively conventional studies are elevated to the sublime with the use of buttery mark making and juicy colour, while more abstract compositions refresh and intrigue with their juxtaposition of both likely and unlikely components.
