David Tress is now well established as one of the Wales's, as well as the UK's, most notable interpreters of the landscape. This reputation has been further established by his current Welsh Arts Council Travelling Exhibition Chasing Sublime Light due to conclude at Stowe School, Buckinghamshire in September/October 2010.
To produce this fascinating body of work Tress researched a good many of the locations in Northumberland, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Wales that artists such as Turner and Girtin visited some two hundred years ago, placing himself as close as possible to the spots the English masters used for their compositions. It is a show well worth visiting, and is accompanied by a fine catalogue which includes an enlightening essay by Ian Jeffrey.
This brochure features a small body of new works, the first that we have received from the artist since his successful exhibition with us in 2009. Other examples not illustrated on these pages can be found on our website www.johndaviesgallery.com.
David Tress employs an inventive and very physical technique to convey the immediacy of his emotional response to his chosen environment. He often combines the layering of paper with the application of mixed media with vigourous hatching out to heighten effects of light. Public collections that include his work include The National Museums and Galleries of Wales, The Museum of Modern Art, Wales and The Guildhall Art Gallery, City of London.
